The Western Front of Downtown Gdańsk

The western front of Gdańsk's city centre is a key part of the urban ring, created at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries during the city's major reconstruction. In place of the old earth bastions that marked the city border for over three centuries, new streets and squares were laid out, surrounded by new metropolitan buildings. After the city's destruction in 1945, attempts were made to redevelop this area, but many projects were either not implemented or only partially realized, leading to the current degradation of the western front, which now functions mainly as a thoroughfare. Łukasz Bugalski explores the urban heritage of this area, demonstrating its significant potential despite its disordered state.
