Fotografika
“Fotografika. Art Photography in Poland 1927–1978” is a catalog accompanying two complementary exhibitions held in 2022: one in Kraków (Museum of Photography, curated by Łukasz Gorczyca and Adam Mazur) and another in Warsaw (Academy of Fine Arts, curated by Weronika Kobylińska and Marika Kuźmicz). The book explores the concept of fotografika—a term coined by Jan Bułhak in 1927 to distinguish artistic photography from professional photography and align it with the fine arts. The publication examines the evolution of fotografika from Bułhak's soft-focus landscapes to Edward Hartwig's experimental approach in the 1950s, which shaped Polish photography for decades. Essays analyze the methods and inspirations of Hartwig and provide a broader historical perspective on fotografika. Richly illustrated, it features over 100 canonical and lesser-known works by Polish photographers.
