Emil František Burian was a leading figure in Czech culture in the first half of the 20th century. A composer, singer, essayist, and co-founder of the avant-garde D Theatre, he was a director, playwright, teacher, and leader of Czechoslovak theatre. Burian also worked in radio and film, composing operas and cabaret songs still popular today. His D Theatre was revolutionary, operating as a collective where all members, including actors and staff, were equal. The theatre also organized lectures, festivals, and participated in the resistance during WWII. This anthology presents a selection of his essays, reflecting his broad artistic and social interests.
