Sylwester "Kris" Braun
A photographic and textual narrative about the life and work of Sylwester "Kris" Braun, renowned for his iconic photo of the Prudential explosion and as one of the most important photographers of the Warsaw Uprising. Braun began documenting Warsaw’s destruction in 1939, continued during the 1944 uprising, and resumed after returning to the city in 1945. The book uncovers previously unknown aspects of his biography, mapping his photographic journey through the Uprising, revealing where he walked, what he captured most often, and where he didn’t reach. Texts by Piotr Głogowski, Iwona Kurz, Tomasz Stempowski, and Tomasz Szerszeń place Braun’s work in broader contexts: the activities of other wartime photographers and the enduring significance of his images in the narrative of the Warsaw Uprising.
