Mer de Glace, the second-longest glacier in the Alps, lends its name to Małgorzata Lebda's latest poetry collection. This title marks a new chapter for the Gdynia Literary Award winner, whose earlier works rooted in rural themes and family ties (e.g., Granica lasu, Matecznik) now explore broader landscapes across Poland and Central Europe. Lebda’s hallmark photographic imagery and metaphors guide readers through out-of-town sceneries, weaving a multi-layered narrative about humanity and its surroundings. The volume intertwines stories: of the body, its fragility and complexity; of human attitudes and the joy found in simplicity; and of nature's bounty described poetically yet with prosaic clarity. Central, though subtly pervasive, is the theme of catastrophe—the end of the world already unfolding. Lebda captures the quiet moments of peace and humanity’s often symbolic, futile efforts to resist inevitable change (glacier funerals – putting white shrouds on them to distract the sun's attention), creating a poignant meditation on existence and loss.
