Gloss, Matte, Color. Photography and Warsaw in the 90s.
The book, edited by Karolina Puchała-Rojek, accompanies the exhibition of the same name at the Museum of Warsaw (October 20, 2022 – February 19, 2023). The 1990s in Poland were a time of contrasts: the promise of freedom and limitless possibilities clashed with chaos, disappointments, and poverty. In Warsaw, rapid changes were evident in architecture, social behaviors, and fashion. Photography captured this transformation, with the rise of the press and advertising reshaping professional photography, while easier access to equipment encouraged amateurs to explore the medium. The book features over 250 photographs, complemented by interview excerpts, essays, and a review of 1990s events. Keywords like color, contrast, and narratives serve to interpret the changing city, where Warsaw and photography narrate each other’s evolution.
