Anthology of Glances. The Warsaw Ghetto: Photographs and Films
Nearly 300 photographs and film frames in the book offer diverse perspectives on the Warsaw Ghetto. They include views of the Chłodna and Żelazna streets intersection, where crowds from the “Aryan” and “non-Aryan” sides met; views from outside, stopped by the walls; and views from within, capturing the ghetto as seen by both perpetrators and victims of violence. The images also document the “place after the ghetto,” transformed into a politically significant commemorative space. Spanning 1940 to 1948, from the area’s designation as at risk of typhus to the fifth anniversary of the ghetto uprising, these images transcend mere documentation. They reflect diverse experiences of space, personal choices, and the varied motivations of Jewish, German, and Polish photographers and filmmakers, both professional and amateur. Compiled from American, Israeli, Polish, and German archives, the book explores the complexities of photographic testimony.
