The book (with accompanying exhibition of the same title) is a groundbreaking publication containing ten essays by authors who address the aesthetics of puppet theater – its flirtation with politics, the relationship between puppet theater and photography, its general phenomenon and the potential of the puppets themselves. Additionally, it discusses puppet theater for adults as well as the educational aspects of puppet scenes. Its importance lies in an interdisciplinary approach to a field which has hitherto been pushed to the outskirts of theater history. The book is richly illustrated and includes archival photographs from performances, as well as puppet films, set designs and puppet portraits.
