From the mid-19th century to the outbreak of the Great War, 2.5 million inhabitants of partitioned Poland left for the United States. In an effort to combat the wave of mass emigration, czarist authorities decided to “arrest” letters sent by Poles overseas to their relatives. This publication presents a selection of texts and reportages describing this phenomenon, in a historical and contemporary context, making for a great addition to the exhibition under the same title.
Od połowy XIX wieku do wybuchu I wojny światowej z Polski do Stanów Zjednoczonych wyemigrowało 2,5 miliona ludzi. Ówczesna carska władza, walcząc z masowymi emigracjami, postanowiła „aresztować” listy, które zza oceanu polscy emigranci słali do swych rodzin. „Wszyscy jesteśmy migrantami. Listy polskich emigrantów z Ameryki z końca XIX wieku” jest zbiorem tekstów i reportaży opisujących to zjawisko, zarówno w kontekście historycznym, jak i współczesnym, stanowi także dopełnienie wystawy o tym samym tytule.
